GST Calculator

What is a GST calculator?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is charged on almost every sale of goods and services in India. A GST calculator lets you either add GST to a base price (GST-exclusive) or extract GST from a price that already includes it (GST-inclusive). Our tool also splits the tax into CGST and SGST for intra-state sales or shows IGST for inter-state sales.

GST formulas

Adding GST (exclusive price)

GST amount = Net price × GST rate / 100

Gross price = Net price + GST amount

Example: ₹10,000 at 18% → GST = ₹1,800, gross price = ₹11,800.

Removing GST (inclusive price)

Net price = Gross price × 100 / (100 + GST rate)

GST amount = Gross price − Net price

Example: ₹11,800 including 18% GST → net = 11,800 × 100 / 118 = ₹10,000, GST = ₹1,800. A common mistake is to take 18% of ₹11,800 (₹2,124), which overstates the tax.

How to use the GST calculator

  1. Enter the amount.
  2. Pick the GST slab: 3%, 5%, 12%, 18% or 28%.
  3. Choose “Add GST” if the amount excludes tax, or “Remove GST” if the amount already includes it.
  4. Read the net amount, GST amount and total, plus the CGST/SGST split.

The table shows GST when ₹10,000 is the net price (add GST) and when ₹10,000 is the GST-inclusive price (remove GST).

CGST, SGST and IGST explained

  • Intra-state supply (seller and buyer in the same state): GST is split equally into CGST and SGST/UTGST. At 18%, that is 9% CGST + 9% SGST.
  • Inter-state supply: the full rate is charged as IGST.
  • The total tax paid by the customer is the same in both cases.

Common GST slabs

  • 3% – gold, silver and jewellery.
  • 5% – essential items such as packaged food staples, economy transport and some restaurant services.
  • 12% – processed foods and certain household goods.
  • 18% – most services, including banking fees, loan processing fees and telecom.
  • 28% – luxury and sin goods, often with additional cess.

Slab rates are revised by the GST Council from time to time, so always confirm the current rate for your product or service. Note that GST applies to loan processing fees and some charges, but not to the interest component of your EMI. To plan a purchase on credit, see our personal loan EMI calculator, car loan EMI calculator or home loan EMI calculator.

Who uses a GST calculator?

Shop owners use it to quote prices quickly, freelancers and consultants use it to prepare invoices at 18%, and buyers use it to check how much tax is included in a bill. Accountants rely on it to cross-check input tax credit claims, since a business can usually claim credit for GST paid on purchases against GST collected on sales. Small businesses with turnover below the registration threshold do not charge GST at all, and composition-scheme dealers pay tax at a flat rate on turnover without charging it separately to customers. When preparing an invoice, show the taxable value, the rate, and the CGST, SGST or IGST amounts as separate lines so your customer can claim credit correctly. Rounding is normally done to the nearest rupee or paisa on the final invoice total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove 18% GST from a price?
