How to Use the EMI Calculator

The EMITotal EMI calculator shows your monthly instalment in seconds. You don’t need to sign up or download anything. Just follow these steps:

  • Step 1 – Enter the loan amount: Type the principal you want to borrow in rupees (₹), for example ₹10,00,000.
  • Step 2 – Enter the interest rate: Add the annual interest rate (% p.a.) your bank or NBFC has offered, for example 9%.
  • Step 3 – Choose the tenure: Set the repayment period in years or months. Five years is the same as 60 months.
  • Step 4 – Read the results: The calculator shows your monthly EMI, the total interest you will pay over the loan, and the total amount payable (principal plus interest).
  • Step 5 – Compare options: Change the amount, rate or tenure to see how your EMI and total interest change before you pick a loan.

EMI Formula Explained

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until the loan is fully repaid. Banks in India use this standard reducing-balance formula:

E = P × r × (1 + r)^n / ((1 + r)^n − 1)

  • E = monthly EMI
  • P = principal (loan amount)
  • r = monthly interest rate = annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100
  • n = tenure in months

Worked Example: ₹10,00,000 at 9% for 5 Years

  • P = ₹10,00,000
  • r = 9 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.0075
  • n = 5 × 12 = 60 months
  • (1 + r)^n = (1.0075)^60 ≈ 1.565681
  • E = 10,00,000 × 0.0075 × 1.565681 ÷ (1.565681 − 1) ≈ ₹20,758 per month

Over 60 months you will pay about ₹12,45,501 in total. That includes ₹2,45,501 as interest. Each EMI has an interest part and a principal part. In the early months, most of the EMI goes towards interest. Later on, most of it goes towards the principal.

Example EMIs for Common Loans

The table below shows typical EMIs for popular loan types in India. All figures are rounded to the nearest rupee.

Loan TypeLoan AmountRate (p.a.)TenureMonthly EMITotal InterestTotal Payable
Home Loan₹30,00,0008.5%20 years₹26,035₹32,48,327₹62,48,327
Car Loan₹8,00,0009%5 years₹16,607₹1,96,401₹9,96,401
Personal Loan₹3,00,00012%3 years₹9,964₹58,715₹3,58,715

Look at the home loan. Over 20 years, the total interest is more than the amount you borrowed. Long loans cost a lot more than they first seem to.

How Interest Rate and Tenure Affect Your EMI

The interest rate and the tenure are the two biggest factors behind your EMI and your total cost.

Interest Rate

A higher rate means a higher EMI and more total interest. For a ₹10,00,000 loan over 5 years, 9% gives an EMI of ₹20,758. At 10%, the EMI goes up to ₹21,247 and the total interest rises from ₹2,45,501 to ₹2,74,823. A difference of just 1% costs you almost ₹29,000 extra.

Tenure

A longer tenure lowers your EMI but raises the total interest you pay. Take the same ₹10,00,000 at 9%:

  • 3 years: EMI ₹31,800, total interest ₹1,44,790
  • 5 years: EMI ₹20,758, total interest ₹2,45,501
  • 7 years: EMI ₹16,089, total interest ₹3,51,483

Pick the shortest tenure whose EMI you can still pay comfortably. That keeps your total interest low.

Tips to Reduce Your EMI

  • Improve your credit score: A CIBIL score of 750 or more usually gets you lower interest rates.
  • Make a bigger down payment: Borrowing less lowers your EMI and your total interest.
  • Compare lenders: Check rates, processing fees and other charges from several banks and NBFCs before you apply.
  • Prepay when you can: Use bonuses or extra savings to pay off part of the principal. On floating-rate home loans, banks generally don’t charge individual borrowers for prepayment.
  • Consider a balance transfer: Moving your loan to a lender with a lower rate can cut your EMI. Check the transfer costs first.
  • Choose the tenure wisely: A longer tenure lowers your EMI. Just remember it also raises your total interest.
  • Negotiate: If you have a steady income or already bank with the lender, ask for a better rate.

EMI Kaise Calculate Kare?

EMI calculate karna bahut aasaan hai. Upar diye gaye calculator mein apna loan amount, interest rate (saalana %) aur tenure (saal ya mahine) daaliye. Aapki monthly EMI, total interest aur total payable amount turant dikh jayega. Agar aap khud calculate karna chahte hain, to formula hai E = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1). Isme r monthly rate hai (saalana rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) aur n mahinon ki sankhya hai. Misaal ke taur par, ₹10 lakh ka loan 9% par 5 saal ke liye lene par EMI lagbhag ₹20,758 banti hai.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EMI?

EMI (Equated Monthly Instalment) is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month. Each EMI covers part of the interest and part of the principal, until the loan is fully repaid.

How is EMI calculated?

EMI is calculated with the formula E = P × r × (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n − 1). Here P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the tenure in months.

Is the EMITotal EMI calculator free to use?

Yes. The calculator is completely free. You don’t need to register, and you can use it as many times as you like.

Can I use this calculator for home, car and personal loans?

Yes. The same formula works for any loan with fixed monthly instalments, including home loans, car loans, personal loans, education loans and two-wheeler loans.

Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?

Yes, a longer tenure lowers your monthly EMI. However, you will pay much more interest over the life of the loan.

Will my EMI change if my interest rate changes?

On a floating-rate loan, the lender may change your EMI, your tenure or both when the rate changes. On a fixed-rate loan, the EMI stays the same for the fixed period.

Are processing fees included in the EMI?

No. The calculator only uses the principal, the interest rate and the tenure. Processing fees, insurance and GST are charged separately and are not part of the EMI.
